Lindsay Danner is an expert on Chinese bronzes who has an uncanny ability to separate fake from real. She is also a woman alone whose deeply buried memories bring her to screaming wakefulness in the small hours of the night. In the daytime, she has just one requirement of the people and objects in her life—honesty.

Jacob MacArthur Catlin was known under many names in the past, especially Dragon. Intelligent, ruthless, deadly, he became a legend in the shadow world of spies. His life was constructed of lies, deceit, and treachery. When he left that world, he never looked back. And never wanted to.

Then a man comes to Catlin bearing one half of an ancient Chinese coin. The past comes to dangerous life, a danger the sweeps up Lindsay. She is utterly unprepared for a life of lies. Catlin isn’t. Only working together can they survive layer after layer of deadly lies and shattering truths—and one of those truths is love.

I first read this book in the library and decided I wanted it to always be available to me. Since I have a Kindle, I bought a version for the Kindle.

This is Elizabeth Lowell's first book. It is about Chinese bronzes.

Elizabeth Lowell has a series of books about various gemstones - Amber, Jade, Pearls, Ruby's, Sapphire's. She, also, has a book about Celtic gold, and gold leafed manuscripts. Her research is intense and makes the stories very, very satisfying.

Because of this book I actually looked up Xi'an to see what there was about it. As far as I'm concerned she nailed it perfectly.

OK, on to the story. This a about a bronze specialist who was born in China and raised there by here missionary parents until she was a teenager. She was then sent to the US to live with an Aunt because it was getting much more dangerous in China.

She has an inborn talent for telling fakes from true bronze. It is a gift that she was born with. It is, also, well known that she will not deal with any questionable bronzes whatsoever.

A Chinese national wishes her to verify or not verify a charioteer with horses when/if it ever gets to the US. This national has enlisted a former CIA agent, who now works for his own company advising people about doing business with China and the other pacific rim country's, to protect her during the wait and the search for the bronzes.

Along on this journey is a counter-intelligence agent and several of his agents. They are supposed to be monitoring what is happening.

The story moves quite swiftly and the heat between the two characters is intense from the beginning. The problem with this is keeping their hands off of each other.

Through Lindsey, the woman, we see a different view of the US from a foreign view.

I'm not going to go on because I feel that it would include spoilers.

I love this book and I recommend it to anyone with curiosity and a fondness for history, as well as a damned good story. I think that the next time you walk into a museum you will have a completely different view of, not just Chinese bronzes, but any bronzes.

Tell Me No Lies edition by Elizabeth Lowell Romance eBooks Reviews

This is a Elizabeth Lowell reprint, but one I enjoy the most. The story revolves around possible stolen bronzes from China and the possibility of US/China relations breakdown if the bronzes are found in the US.
Lindsey Danner is being used by the FBI and both sides of China politics in a bid to break or keep relations with US. Her reputation for always being able to tell the true from fake bronzes is one reason everyone wants her. Her total rock solid refusal to lie about a bronze puts her in danger; if she is brought in to identify the stolen bronzes and they are found to be real, relations will break. So, some chinese politicians definitely want her dead.
In comes the Dragon, Jacob MacArthur Catlin, late of the CIA. He is brought in to pay off an old debt to a chinese family. Catlin is to protect Lindsey from everyone and to be her "guide" during an FBI sting to recover the bronzes. However, during the sting, Catlin and Lindsey are to act as lovers. Lindsey finds acting as Catlin's lover hard since she is a truthfull person. As the sting goes on, it becomes harder and harder to tell the truth from lies. Is Catlin attracted to her? or is it the act?
This is a very riviting and steamy novel. As always, I love the culture, history, and behind the scenes of Lowell's characters' professions. It is always a learning experience reading a Lowell novel for me.
So enjoy "Tell Me No Lies"...
Book too full of useless detail and long character introspection causing a slow pace. Nothing unique or exciting to push ahead so I forced myself hoping it would get better. It didn't. I finished but nothing memorable. Main characters had scant backrounds and didn't really get together until halfway through book. Far too much detail on Chinese antiques and history. If I wanted a travel/ history book I wouldn't have wasted money on this light on romance book with too many confusing side characters. Plus many, many typos that publisher should be blamed for. Had to skip so much it made the book disjointed and hard to read.
I read this one years ago, but lost track of my copy so was excited to find this one on . I've read just about every Elizabeth Lowell book out there, and this has always been my favorite, out of a panopoly of great Lowell books. Her characters always come to life for me, but for some reason, the people in this one reached out and grabbed me by the throat. She presented the Chinese bronzes that served as the setting for this story as a reflection of the history and culture of the Chinese people rather than just as mere dry fact and value to collectors. The characters all have both good and dark aspects, as do we all, and the motivations for their actions ring absolutely true. The only other book approaching this one for me was "To the Ends of the Earth."

The fact that much of China's development over the three decades since Elizabeth wrote this book has proceeded along the exact lines she predicts is just an unexpected bonus for new and repeat readers today.
This is a terrific example of romantic suspense for intelligent readers. The author has done a great job of presenting U.S./Sino relations during the 20th century. The reader gets a fabulous glimpse into Chinese culture using the marvels of Xi'an as a backdrop to political intrigue. Add in a unique anti-hero and a strong heroine for some great steam to the mix.

It is a testament to the author's writing thst this was written in the mid 80's and feels only a little dated with public pay phones and hotel keys.
This still ranks as one of my top picks for E.L. Though when I reread it I tend to skip over the "technical" parts for lack of a better word, this novel is rich in Chinese and other Asian culture, history, descriptions and explanations. The characters are interesting and draw you in. Yes this is an older book, please don't look at it or read it expecting it to be a "current" offering, it does the author, the book, and yourself a disservice. Enjoy it for what it is. Immersion Quotient 3.5 out of 5
